Kill tests
- TODO — flora survey on parcel (cheapest; walk the parcel in flowering season). What would kill it: no leatherwood or equivalent high-grade native nectar source on or adjacent to the parcel. ASSUMPTION — the pollination-services add-on (hermes round-3) partially de-risks this: even if on-parcel flora is thin, mobile hives can forage off-parcel and earn pollination fees.
- TODO — hive-placement use-class confirmation from Huon Valley Council. What would kill it: council rules that hive placement is a Discretionary or Prohibited use requiring a planning application. Never assert permit- free without council confirmation.
- TODO — biosecurity (varroa) obligations check with NRE / Biosecurity Tasmania. What would kill it: obligations that make the capital or labour cost uneconomic at 20 hives.

Verified yield & price — NRE Tasmanian Beekeeping Survey 2021 (2026-07-09)
Source: Tasmanian Beekeeping Survey Report 2021 (AgriGrowth Tasmania, NRE Tas), reporting the 2020-21 financial year. Primary agency survey — the first Tasmania-specific figure the round-2 panel ASSUMPTIONs lacked.
- FACT — statewide average yield 37.18 kg/hive in 2020-21 (survey respondents produced 630 t of honey from 16,953 hives). Nearly double the 2018-19 figure; 2020-21 was a strong leatherwood flowering year, so this is an above-baseline season, not a floor.
- FACT — statewide average farm-gate price $12.63/kg in 2020-21 ($12.8 M total across ~28,512 registered hives; respondents reported $6.7 M from 530 t). Down from $18.27/kg in 2018-19 — the price fell as the bumper harvest lifted volume.

What this does to kill test #4. These are statewide averages at farm gate, not single-origin leatherwood retail. Applied to the panel’s 20-hive scenario: 20 × 37.18 kg × $12.63/kg ≈ $9.4k/yr gross (≈$13.6k at the 2018-19 price). That brackets below the round-2 ASSUMPTION of $15–24k/yr — which is only reachable at premium/single-origin retail pricing (ASSUMPTION: AUD 18–25/kg wholesale to beekeepers, 70–90/kg retail, per trade listings — not an agency figure), and only in a good flowering year.
- RISK (sharpened) — at average farm-gate price the apiary’s gross is roughly half the panel figure; the $15–24k/yr case depends on capturing a single-origin retail premium AND above-average yield simultaneously.
- TODO (residual of #4) — a Tasmania-specific single-origin leatherwood farm-gate/wholesale quote (a beekeeper or packer price), plus the on-parcel flora survey (#1) that decides whether the honey is leatherwood-grade at all.
